Different cell treatments are intended to work in different ways. The cell type and how it is used matter more than the broad phrase “regenerative medicine”. A treatment explanation should connect the proposed mechanism to evidence in your condition.

What makes a stem cell different?
Stem cells can renew themselves and give rise to specialised cells. Their capabilities vary: adult tissue stem cells and pluripotent cells are different categories. They should not be described as interchangeable ingredients. NIH: stem cell basics.
Ask the clinician to name the cell population in the proposed product, rather than referring only to its source tissue. “From bone marrow” or “from umbilical cord” is not a complete product specification.
Replacement, signalling and immune effects
Blood-forming transplantation, experimental MSC approaches and immune-cell treatments pursue different biological goals. Ask whether the proposed benefit depends on replacing cells, changing signals or directing an immune response, and which patient evidence supports that explanation.
An asserted mechanism is a hypothesis to test. It does not determine the size, duration or likelihood of a clinical benefit. See MSC signalling research and transplantation versus MSC infusion for more detail.
Why the route matters
| Route | Question for the clinician |
|---|---|
| Local injection | Why this site, and what evidence used the same approach? |
| IV infusion | What outcome is expected for this diagnosis? |
| Transplant or surgical procedure | What preparation, hospital care and follow-up are required? |
Changing the route changes the intervention. A paper about a joint injection cannot by itself justify a general infusion.
What is not a stem cell?
PRP and exosome preparations are different categories. Their names are sometimes grouped with cell therapy in marketing, but that does not make them equivalent. Compare stem cells and PRP or stem cells and exosomes before evaluating a package.
Common questions
Do injected cells automatically become new tissue?
That cannot be assumed. Ask what the treatment actually demonstrated in human studies.
Does a sophisticated mechanism mean it works?
No. Patient outcomes and controlled evidence are needed. Read the effectiveness guide.
