Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell preparations are different interventions. Their shared use in some treatment discussions does not mean that one is a stronger or newer version of the other.

What is PRP?
PRP is prepared from a patient’s blood to concentrate platelets. It is not a stem cell product. AAOS describes variable results across conditions and preparation methods, so evidence needs to be interpreted for the intended use. AAOS: platelet-rich plasma.

Compare outcomes, not labels
Ask whether there is a direct comparative study, rather than separate trials with different patients and measures. A report of improvement after one procedure does not establish that it outperforms the other.

Before agreeing to a procedure
- What diagnosis is being treated?
- What preparation and administration route are proposed?
- What are the alternatives and their evidence?
- How will response be measured?
- What are the procedure-specific risks and follow-up arrangements?
Tell the clinician about your medicines and previous reactions. Do not change prescribed treatment without an individual plan.
Compare the whole course cost
Ask how many sessions are proposed, why, and what would lead to reassessment. Include consultation, any collection procedure, guidance, rehabilitation and monitoring. The least expensive session may not be the least expensive course, and the higher price does not prove greater benefit.
