There is no universal number of months or years. Separate the procedure’s duration, recovery time and duration of any measured benefit. A study following patients for a year does not promise a year of benefit, and a repeat-treatment package is not evidence that maintenance is necessary. See the guide to duration and follow-up.

Separate treatment time from benefit
The appointment length, recovery period and duration of a measured response answer different questions. Ask which one a provider means. A long follow-up period does not mean that every participant benefited throughout it, and persistence of a biological marker is not the same as a lasting improvement in daily life.
Questions to take to a consultation
- Which outcome was measured over time?
- How many patients remained in follow-up?
- Did other treatments contribute to the later results?
Request clear written answers and discuss unresolved points with a clinician familiar with your history before committing to a product or procedure.
