Back pain is a symptom, not a single diagnosis. Before comparing stem cell prices, establish which structure is thought to cause the pain and whether the proposed treatment targets it. A general IV package and a spinal injection are not the same intervention.

Identify what the proposal is meant to treat
Ask the assessing clinician to explain the diagnosis in plain language and relate it to the examination and imaging. Record whether the proposal concerns a disc, another spinal structure or a systemic infusion. Do not assume a scan finding alone proves the source of symptoms.
Fusion, when considered, is a surgical approach to selected spinal problems and stability; it is not a generic back-pain treatment. AAOS: spinal fusion.
What to ask for in the estimate
- Specialist consultation and review of existing imaging
- Any additional imaging or diagnostic procedures
- Precise product and anatomical target, or IV route
- Guidance, anaesthesia or sedation if proposed
- Observation, rehabilitation and reassessment
Ask for the currency, quote expiry date, payment schedule and cancellation terms. Separate optional services from required care, and identify what is excluded.
Ask how success will be measured
Agree on the outcome that matters to you: pain during a defined activity, walking ability, sleep or reduced disability. Ask how long the evidence follows patients and whether it tested the same treatment route. A promise to “repair the spine” needs more explanation than a pain score.

Plan for reassessment
An estimate should state what happens if the diagnosis changes or the proposed procedure is not appropriate. Ask who reviews persistent symptoms, whether another opinion is included and what additional care would cost. Keep prescribed treatment in place unless the responsible clinician advises a change.
Common questions
Can you quote from an MRI image alone?
A meaningful plan requires clinical assessment, not just an isolated image. Ask what records and examination are needed.
Are repeated procedures included?
Request an explicit session count and a separate explanation of why repetition is proposed. A package structure is not evidence of medical necessity.
