What is actually being injected?
Ask for the full name of the preparation, its tissue source and whether it uses your own cells or donor cells. A bone marrow concentrate, a cultured mesenchymal stromal cell product and a cell-free preparation should not be treated as interchangeable. Read the MSC overview alongside the product information.

What does the knee osteoarthritis evidence show?
A 2025 Cochrane review found low-certainty evidence that injections may slightly improve pain and function compared with placebo for up to six months. It remained uncertain how they affect quality of life or treatment success. Structural disease progression was not assessed, so the review does not establish cartilage regrowth or prevention of joint replacement.
Preparations and study methods varied. Safety findings were also uncertain; small trials cannot reliably rule out uncommon serious harms. What should an assessment cover?
Start with a clear diagnosis and your treatment goals. Bring relevant imaging reports, a medication list, previous procedure details and a summary of what has or has not helped. Ask the assessing clinician to compare the proposed injection with established options for your condition.

Risks and recovery
Potential problems include pain, bleeding and infection from the procedure. Cell collection, when required, adds a separate procedure. Unapproved regenerative products have also been associated with contamination and unwanted immune or tissue responses; the risk depends on the specific product and use. Ask for written recovery instructions and a direct clinical contact for complications. Seek urgent medical assessment for a hot, very swollen joint with fever, rapidly worsening pain or serious illness after a procedure. Breathing difficulty or collapse requires emergency care.

Are injections the same as a stem cell IV?
No. An injection targets a specified site; an IV infusion is delivered into a vein. Evidence for one route does not establish benefit for the other.
Can an injection rebuild my cartilage?
The Cochrane review above does not establish this. Ask whether a claimed benefit was measured as symptoms, imaging changes or another outcome.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no universal schedule. Ask for the evidence behind the proposed number, how response will be assessed and when further treatment would be stopped.
